San Bernardino Mountain Community

Rentals in Sugarloaf, CA

Welcome to Sugarloaf, an unincorporated mountain community on the east side of Big Bear Valley, tucked against San Bernardino National Forest with year-round access to skiing, hiking, and Big Bear Lake.

Sugarloaf is an unincorporated residential community in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, occupying the east side of the Big Bear Valley in San Bernardino County. It lies south of Big Bear City and east of Big Bear Lake, within the high-elevation country that rises above the Inland Empire. Because the community has no municipal government, services are provided by the county, and its identity is tied to the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest and the broader Big Bear resort region. The community is named for Sugarloaf Mountain, a prominent peak whose summit marks the highest point in the Big Bear Valley. The Sugarloaf National Recreation Trail begins in the area and climbs roughly ten miles through forest to the mountain top, drawing hikers in the warmer months. Big Bear High School stands in the northern portion of the community, anchoring it to the valley's school system and everyday life. Sugarloaf developed as a quieter, more residential counterpart to the busier lakefront and ski-area communities of Big Bear. Its streets hold a mix of full-time homes and vacation cabins, many on larger lots and set back among pines. The elevation and forest setting mean real winters with snow, and the community sits within easy reach of the ski lifts at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit and the boating and lakeside activity at Big Bear Lake. For buyers, Sugarloaf offers the appeal of mountain living with somewhat more space and solitude than the dense lakefront districts, while remaining only minutes from the valley's recreation and services. It appeals to full-time residents seeking a slower pace, and to owners of second homes who use the area as a year-round mountain retreat.
