The community lies at an elevation of about 3,800 feet, southwest of Hesperia and east of Phelan, within the broad, arid landscape of the Mojave Desert. The area's defining quality is space. Oak Hills covers roughly 24.5 square miles for a population of about 9,000, giving it a low density and a distinctly rural, open feel. Homes tend to sit on larger lots, and most residents own their property, a pattern that sets the community apart from the denser suburbs and cities downhill.
