Titus County Oil-Field Town

Listings in Talco, TX

Welcome to Talco, a small Titus County city in northeast Texas whose name and history trace to a candy-company wrapper and the East Texas oilfields.

Talco is a city in Titus County, Texas, in the northeastern part of the state, north of Mount Pleasant near the Red River County line. Its population was 494 at the 2020 census. The town's most distinctive feature is its name: Talco was coined from the initials of the Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana Candy Company, taken from a candy-bar wrapper by a local merchant when the community sought a new post office name. That origin gives Talco one of the more memorable place-name stories in East Texas. The community's fortunes rose with the oilfield. Talco grew into a twentieth-century boomtown tied to the East Texas oil industry, and by 1960 it was one of the two largest towns in Titus County, with roughly 1,250 residents alongside the county seat of Mount Pleasant. Oil and gas production, along with agriculture and timber, have remained central to the local economy, and the town's population has since settled to a small-town scale. Talco is served by Rivercrest Independent School District, a consolidated rural district based in nearby Bogata in Red River County that maintains a campus in Talco. That arrangement reflects the close ties between communities along the Titus-Red River county line. The city sits along U.S. Highway 271, which connects it to Mount Pleasant to the south and Bogata and Paris to the north, while Interstate 30 through Mount Pleasant links the region to Dallas-Fort Worth and Texarkana. For residents, Talco offers a quiet, inexpensive setting within a short drive of Mount Pleasant, which provides the region's employment, retail, and medical services. The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of farmland, pasture, and East Texas timberland, with lakes and state parks of the region within easy reach. Talco's identity rests on the oilfield, its candy-wrapper name, and the agricultural and timber landscape of northeast Texas.

About Talco

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Talco consists of modest single-family homes on city lots, alongside scattered rural acreage in the surrounding countryside. Much of the stock is older, reflecting the town's oilfield-era growth and subsequent decades, with some manufactured homes and newer construction on the outskirts. The community is compact and established, with a housing market oriented toward working families rather than destination buyers. Larger parcels, farm properties, and ranch land are available in the rural Titus County area around the city. Its affordability and location near Mount Pleasant make it a practical home base for those tied to regional employment.

Neighborhoods

Talco is a compact city without sharply defined sub-neighborhoods, centered on its streets near U.S. 271. Mount Pleasant, the Titus County seat roughly ten miles south, is the regional hub for jobs, retail, and healthcare. Bogata, across the Red River County line to the north, is the base for the shared Rivercrest school district. Nearby communities include Winfield and Cookville, while the broader region includes Pittsburg and Mount Vernon to the south and Paris to the northwest. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland, pasture, and East Texas timberland, with residences spread along the area's highways and county roads.

Lifestyle in Talco

Life in Talco is small-town and rooted in the oilfield and agricultural traditions of northeast Texas. The city has a modest commercial presence, so residents rely on Mount Pleasant, about ten miles south, for most shopping, dining, and services. The pace is quiet, with community life centered on the school, churches, and the surrounding countryside. The area's economy leans on oil and gas, farming, and the timber and light industry of the wider Titus County region. Talco suits those seeking an inexpensive, low-density setting with a short drive to Mount Pleasant's jobs, retail, and healthcare and to the recreation lands of northeast Texas.

Schools & Education

Talco is served by Rivercrest Independent School District, a consolidated rural district based in Bogata in neighboring Red River County. The district, formed through the combination of the Talco and Bogata systems, maintains a campus in Talco and serves students from communities on both sides of the county line. It operates elementary, middle, and high school programs for a small, spread-out enrollment. For higher education, residents look to Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant and other regional institutions. Families considering the area should expect a small, close-knit district with the practical characteristics of a rural East Texas school system.

Getting Around

Talco sits along U.S. Highway 271, the principal north-south route connecting Mount Pleasant with Bogata, Paris, and the Red River. Interstate 30 passes through Mount Pleasant about ten miles to the south, linking the region to Dallas-Fort Worth to the west and Texarkana to the east. State highways provide additional connections to Pittsburg and other county towns. There is no public transit in Talco, so personal vehicles are essential, with Mount Pleasant serving as the nearest center for services and regional travel. Dallas-Fort Worth lies roughly two hours to the west via Interstate 30, and Texarkana is about an hour east.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Talco draws on the lakes, forests, and state parks of northeast Texas. Lake Bob Sandlin and its state park lie within Titus County to the south, offering fishing, boating, camping, and hiking, while other regional reservoirs and the area's timberland provide hunting and outdoor recreation. Mount Pleasant, about ten miles south, adds municipal parks, sports facilities, and community events. The broader region's state parks, including Daingerfield State Park and Atlanta State Park, are within a day trip, and the area's rural roads offer a quiet setting for cycling and general outdoor activity.
