Historic Crossroads in East Texas

About Midway, TX

Welcome to Midway, a small Madison County city at the historic junction of the Old San Antonio Road and La Bahía Road in East Texas.

Midway is a small incorporated city in northeastern Madison County, Texas, situated at the junction of two historically significant travel routes: the Old San Antonio Road, known as El Camino Real de los Tejas, and the La Bahía Road, which connected early Texas settlements and missions. Today those routes are State Highway OSR and State Highway 21, and their intersection remains the geographic center of the community. The town lies in the rolling farmland and woodland of East Texas, within a few miles of the Trinity River basin, in a landscape of pasture, hayfields, and scattered timber. A settlement existed at the site by 1854, and the community took the name Midway in 1855 when Professor Joseph A. Clark arrived from Midway, Kentucky, and established the town around the crossroads. Its position on these early roads made it a small waypoint, trading stop, and agricultural center through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, serving the surrounding ranches and farms. The community later incorporated as a city while retaining a distinctly rural, low-density character that has changed little over the decades. Midway is the smallest incorporated city in Madison County, with a population of 173 in the 2020 census. It is a quiet community where most residents own their homes, and its economy and daily life are tied to the surrounding ranches, farms, and the nearby county seat of Madisonville. The community is served by the Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District, and students travel to Madisonville for school. For prospective residents, Midway represents the rural end of the Texas real-estate spectrum: a historic crossroads town offering space, privacy, and a slow pace, positioned between Huntsville to the southeast and Madisonville to the west. Its location on two state highways and its proximity to Interstate 45 keep it connected to the larger towns and cities of East Texas while its own streets remain quiet country roads.

City Guide

About Midway

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Midway consists almost entirely of single-family homes on larger lots, along with rural acreage, ranch properties, and scattered farmsteads in the surrounding countryside. The town is small and unincorporated in scale despite its city status, so there are no large subdivisions or multifamily developments. Homes range from older country houses to newer single-family construction on spacious parcels, and most residents own their homes. The market is modest and low-density, appealing to buyers who want rural living, room for livestock or equipment, and a quiet setting while remaining within reach of Madisonville and Huntsville along the state highway network.

Neighborhoods

Midway is too small to have distinct named neighborhoods. The community is arranged loosely along the junction of State Highway 21 and State Highway OSR, with homes, a few local businesses, and open countryside intermingled. Residential properties sit on individual lots and rural parcels rather than in platted subdivisions, and the town's edges blend directly into Madison County's farmland and pasture. This scattered, low-density pattern means neighbors are often separated by open land, and the community's identity rests on its historic crossroads and rural setting rather than on formal neighborhood boundaries.

Lifestyle in Midway

Life in Midway is quiet and rural, defined by the rhythms of small-town East Texas and the surrounding farm and ranch country. With fewer than 200 residents, the community is close-knit, and most residents own their homes. Daily life centers on the nearby county seat of Madisonville for shopping, services, and schools, while Huntsville provides additional amenities to the southeast. The town's historic crossroads location gives it a quiet sense of heritage, and its residents value the space, privacy, and unhurried pace that come with living in one of the region's smallest incorporated cities.

Schools & Education

Students in Midway attend the Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District, which is headquartered in the county seat of Madisonville and serves the communities of Madison County. The district provides the full range of public education from elementary through high school, with campuses located in Madisonville. Because Midway has no schools of its own, families make the short drive west for classes, athletics, and district activities. For higher education, Sam Houston State University in Huntsville is the nearest four-year institution and a significant regional presence, reachable within a modest drive along the state highway and Interstate 45 corridors.

Getting Around

Midway's position at the junction of State Highway 21 and State Highway OSR places it on two well-traveled rural corridors. State Highway 21 runs east–west, connecting to Madisonville to the west and toward Crockett to the east, while State Highway OSR heads north–south through the Trinity River country. Interstate 45 is reachable via Madisonville or Huntsville, providing the main route toward Dallas–Fort Worth to the northwest and Houston to the southeast. The town has no public transit, and residents rely on private vehicles, but the state highway network keeps the community connected to the larger towns of the region.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Midway draws on the East Texas countryside and its river and forest resources. The Trinity River lies a few miles to the east, offering fishing and riverside access, and the broader Madison County landscape supports hunting, riding, and outdoor recreation on private land. To the south, Huntsville State Park provides camping, hiking, and Lake Raven access, while the Sam Houston National Forest lies to the southeast for more extensive trails and public land. The town itself has limited formal park facilities, so most recreation takes place in the surrounding countryside, on residents' own acreage, or at the regional parks within a short drive.
