Morris County Seat in the Piney Woods

Listings in Daingerfield, TX

Welcome to Daingerfield, the Morris County seat in the East Texas Piney Woods, home to a beloved state park and a steel-town heritage.

Daingerfield is a city in northeastern Texas and the county seat of Morris County, in the Piney Woods region near the state's eastern border. It is the county's largest town, with a population of about 2,608, and sits roughly fifty miles southwest of Texarkana and 125 miles northeast of Dallas. Morris County as a whole had a population of 11,973 at the 2020 census. The town's history reaches back to the Republic of Texas era. In 1841 Daingerfield was named the seat of Paschal County, a short-lived judicial county that was later abolished by court decision. The settlement persisted, and after a large fire destroyed much of the original town in 1879, most businesses relocated to the railhead, establishing the present-day townsite. By the early twentieth century Daingerfield had grown into a regional trade center, and today it hosts an annual Captain Daingerfield Day celebration each October. The area's economy has long been shaped by the steel industry centered in the neighboring community of Lone Star, which sits just outside Daingerfield and shares its school system. The Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD serves roughly 1,000 students across four schools, and the district is a central institution for both towns. Recreation centers on Daingerfield State Park, established in 1938 on land deeded in 1935. The roughly 550-acre park wraps around an 80-acre lake, offering camping, fishing, boating, hiking, and some of the region's best fall color beneath towering loblolly pines. For residents, Daingerfield combines the civic life of a county seat, a forested small-town setting, and ready access to the larger cities of Northeast Texas.

About Daingerfield

Real Estate & Housing

Daingerfield's housing stock reflects its role as a long-established county seat. The town features a traditional street grid with older frame and brick homes near the courthouse and downtown, alongside mid-century ranch-style houses and newer construction on the edges. Lots are generally larger than in urban Texas, and mature trees shade many residential streets. The surrounding Morris County countryside offers acreage, rural homesites, and working farmland for buyers seeking space, while the neighboring community of Lone Star provides additional modest housing tied to its industrial history. Demand is steady and locally driven, anchored by families connected to the school district, the county government, and the regional economy rather than by large-scale development.

Neighborhoods

Daingerfield is organized around a traditional downtown and courthouse square, with residential neighborhoods radiating outward. The oldest homes cluster near the historic core, where the town rebuilt after the 1879 fire and the arrival of the railroad, while mid-century and newer subdivisions spread toward the highways and the state park. The adjacent community of Lone Star, a few miles away, functions as a close residential and industrial neighbor, and the two towns share the Daingerfield-Lone Star school district. Rural acreage and scattered homesites fill the spaces between town and the surrounding Piney Woods, giving the area a blend of in-town neighborhoods and country living within a short drive of the courthouse and schools.

Lifestyle in Daingerfield

Daingerfield offers the unhurried pace of an East Texas county seat with a strong sense of place. Life revolves around the town square and courthouse, local churches, and school activities, and the community comes together each October for Captain Daingerfield Day. The surrounding Piney Woods give the area a lush, forested setting, and Daingerfield State Park provides a year-round gathering place for hiking, fishing, and family camping. The neighboring community of Lone Star, long associated with steel manufacturing, shares schools and services with the county seat, creating a tightly connected local area. Residents value the small-town character while remaining within reach of Texarkana, Longview, and Tyler for shopping, healthcare, and employment.

Schools & Education

Daingerfield is served by Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, a community district in Morris County that also serves the neighboring town of Lone Star. The district operates four schools and enrolls roughly 1,000 students, and it is a focal point of local identity, with the two communities sharing athletics and school events. The district's small scale fosters close relationships between families, staff, and students. Higher education and workforce training are available through Northeast Texas Community College in nearby Mount Pleasant and other regional institutions, while larger universities are reachable in the Dallas and Tyler areas.

Getting Around

Daingerfield sits at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 259 and state highways that link it to the surrounding East Texas region. The city is about fifty miles southwest of Texarkana and 125 miles northeast of Dallas, with Longview, Mount Pleasant, and Tyler among the nearest larger cities. The nearby Lone Star community and its industrial corridor connect to the same highway network. There is no public transit in the city, so residents rely on personal vehicles for commuting and errands. Regional airports serve Longview and Texarkana, while the Dallas–Fort Worth airports provide the nearest major commercial air service.

Parks & Recreation

Daingerfield State Park is the centerpiece of outdoor recreation in the area. Established in 1938, the park covers about 550 acres of Piney Woods forest around an 80-acre lake, offering hiking trails, camping loops with full-hookup sites, fishing, boating, and paddling. The park is especially popular in autumn, when the hardwoods add color to the pine forest. Fishing on the lake targets a variety of species, and the trails wind through the same loblolly pine stands that define the region. Beyond the park, the surrounding East Texas lakes and forests of Morris, Titus, and Camp counties offer additional fishing, hunting, and boating, while Texarkana, Longview, and Tyler provide larger recreational and cultural amenities within a regional drive.
